We bake a lot of bread so I was intrigued by this knife. Basically, it's a coping saw for bread. Like a coping saw, it has a fine, sharp serrated blade. Because the blade is affixed on both ends, it is quite a bit thinner than a typical knife blade. This turns out to be a big plus, because it really reduces the amount of crumbs that are created by slicing bread. Honestly it's just a neat idea and pretty well executed here.Just be aware that, like a coping saw, it can be a little difficult to cut straight with this thing. I'm used to getting out our old bread knife and slicing up a loaf pretty much on auto-pilot, but you do need to pay attention to what you're doing to cut straight.A couple minor points that don't bug me but are worth mentioning. The thickness markers printed on the wooden handle/frame are, in my opinion, pretty useless. Who knows, maybe someone else would like to know their bread slices are exactly 1/2 inch thick. Another thing is that, the way the handle is shaped, you have to grip this like a paddle or spatula instead of using a typical knife grip. It feels slightly awkward at first but you get used to it--and you don't need the extra power of a traditional knife grip anyway because, again, the blade is so thin and sharp. It really does the work for you.Oh, and the packaging was tasteful and 100% recyclable. No plastic for once! Bonus points for that.Bottom line, an unusual but actually very good bread knife. Cool idea to copy the coping saw design.
